R.K.I Leaders' Project Highlights

Cortically-coupled Computer Vision (C3Vision)

c3visionShade

The C3Vision project looks to synergistically couple biological and computer vision systems using a combination of brain computer interfaces, machine learning & pattern classification, and image understanding in the context of understanding the advantages and limitations of both biological and computer vision.

The project is sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the USA.

R.K.I Leaders participated in a collaboration with Columbia University and the City College of New York in the development the Cortically-coupled Computer Vision project.

C3Vision appeared in the 2008 History Channel documentary "THE BRAIN", and has also been featured in the IEEE Spectrum Special Report: The Singularity.(Watch Video)

EEG-based evaluation of Interactive Multimedia

eikona2

Towards quantifying the degree of fun and user engagement.

The ultimate design goal in many multimedia applications is to achieve the maximum possible fun and engagement of users - two key indicators of user satisfaction and multimedia effectiveness.

The central objective of this project is to design a novel methodological framework to quantify the degree of fun and user engagement when interacting with a multimedia application.

Our methodology involves three different usability techniques, namely conventional usability testing, eye-tracking and Electroencephalography (EEG). The combination of the three tests will provide complementary information in order to predict the effectiveness of multimedia applications more accurately.

Thought-controlled Android Tele-operation

eikona3

This project involves the design of novel methods towards a thought-controlled robotic telepresence and the design of a Brain Computer Interface platform that allows the user to remotely control an android robot.

R.K.I Leaders' contribution is in the development of machine learning algorithms and the EEG engine for detection of neural control signals.

Links to Cognitive Processes Across Cultures

prospeedShaded On the universality of speed as an intelligence measure across cultures.

The quest for a general measure of intelligence is older than the short history of psychology. A biological trait such as speed of processing information could be a prime candidate.

Individuals differ in their speed of processing information and, hence, in their intelligence. This statement leads to several questions that the pro-speed study aims to address. A preeminent one concerns the universality of speed as an intelligence measure across cultures.

R.K.I Leaders' participation in the Pro-Speed project includes the development of a comprehensive research platform to perform the experiments and in the statistical analysis of the data.

Graphogame versus PREP Remediation

eprep2shadedOn the effectiveness of remedial programs.

The goal of this project is to examine the appropriateness of the assessment tools and the efficiency of the remedial programs.

The question here will concern whether or not individuals who may gain from remediation can be distinguished from those who may not, on the basis of their cognitive processing performance prior to intervention. Providing specific answers to this question will allow us to make the right selection in terms of matching the remediation program with the child’s specific strengths and weaknesses, producing positive results with less frustration on the child’s part.

R.K.I Leaders' involvement in this project ensures that the information technology requirements are met, and the correct and accurate measurements are obtained an analyzed.

This project is funded under FP6 framework program. Partners include the University of Cyprus.
